Are you tired of hearing about negative news, the dangers of life, and the reality of death at any corner? Fear not, there’s still positivity out there, with the help of heroes. May these stories, old or new, brighten your day and give you much-needed hope!
Canadian Heroes
In Ontario, Canada on March 16th, 2022.
At Atrium on Bay, security was called to help a screaming female. Security guard Olivia Denny from Paragon Security jumped into action. Denny found the female yelling in a public bathroom because her male companion wasn’t responding. He was unconscious, not breathing, his lips and face turning blue. Denny acted, starting CPR compressions right away. Security guard Lopez also assisted in the call, taking over CPR.
It was discovered the male had taken fentanyl, so a dose of naloxone was given. There was still no response from the male. Another dose was given. Then, they stopped CPR. He had regained consciousness! EMS, fire and police officers had arrived, thanking the two guards for their life-saving help. The male was later brought to a hospital. Overdoses on drugs can be extremely fatal, so we can only hope that the male is in treatment. If it wasn’t for these two guards for their CPR training and quick action, the male might not have lived.
Buffalo Heroes
In Buffalo, New York, on November 10th, 2022.
While on duty at a substance abuse treatment center, a security guard named Reynaldo Beckford probably did not know he’d become a hero. That night, a man with a gun entered the facility. Upon entering and firing at a wall, Beckford jumped into action. He tried to tackle the man, grasping for the gun. The struggle continued and another guard joined with civilians also moving in to help. They tackled the gunman, allowing one of the civilians to tear the AR-15 from the gunman’s grasp.
According to local news media, Beckford said he “Would be lying if I said to you I wasn’t scared for my life…the first thing that flashed through my mind was my baby, who just turned three years old.” Local police thanked those four men, “for heroic actions that helped prevent any injuries.” Lives could have been lost, but by Beckford’s bravery and the help of others, they weren’t.
California Heroes
In Beverly Hills, California, on May 26th, 2023.
Two Beverly Hills security guards were at a gas station when a mother started yelling for help. Officers Niko Nesbeth and Joey Madrigal, security guards for Covered 6 Security, moved to action. Nesbeth was in line buying a snack at the gas station before he ran out to help. According to news media, he heard the mother screaming for a doctor, ran over, and was immediately given a baby in his arms. The mother was distressed, turning away from the scene as she knelt on the ground. Multiple people moved in to help save the choking child. According to news media, Nesbeth noticed the baby’s face was “…turning blue. You could tell his colors were changing, so I knew he was choking and wasn’t getting air,” he said.
While Nesbeth was trying to help the baby, other guard Madrigal was contacting paramedics. According to news media, Madrigal knew exactly what to do, “(Nesbeth) tells me the baby isn’t breathing, right then and there I turned and one thing I’ve learned in training is that you’ve got to slow down time. You got to realize and just get all the facts and put it all together because I was in charge of getting rescue as fast as possible.” Luckily rescue arrived in a few minutes.
At the end of the situation, the guards said the baby was alright, according to news media. Security guard Nesbeth, who had served in the U.S. Marines for eight years, said, “It was like the best feeling, to feel that way, to help assist a community, especially a little child, that’s amazing.” He was proud, and rightfully so. Both officers saved a child’s life that day with the proper training they had to take action. The mother of the child no longer had to worry, as the baby was saved.
Security guards and officers don’t always get the recognition they deserve. They are often seen as another annoyance when entering a building, taking up time to check purses and backpacks. But, they really do save lives. It proves how important extra security is to businesses and buildings. Hopefully, we can hear more stories about security guards saving lives, and live in a safer community tomorrow.
