Have you ever wondered how to encourage your child’s school to have a security plan? Sending our children out into the world, especially these days can be scary. Just watch any newscast and you will be inundated with a laundry list of potential dangers our kids face as they go to school. The anxiety can make us want to just keep our kids close and never let them away from our safety net. On the other hand we know how important social, emotional and educational development is. Keeping kids safe and healthy is one of our most important duties.
Being invested in our kids safety
Wouldn’t you feel better sending your kids to school if you knew they were prepared for any possible threat? Having no plan in place is a disaster waiting to happen. Imagine the chaos if an emergency occurred at school and the teachers and students had never practiced or prepared for it. It is important that we as parents and caretakers get invested in our kids’ safety.
Why should schools have a security plan?
Safety awareness is the first step toward bringing our loved ones, especially our children home safe every day. They say ignorance is bliss, but that is not the case when it comes to being able to protect our kids from being harmed. Being aware of the possible emergencies that could occur allows us to prepare if it even happens.
As kids many of us practiced what we would do in the case of a tornado, earthquake or fire. Thank goodness most of us never had to use the skills for a real life emergency however having it in place created a safer environment where children feel like they have a role and responsibility in their own safety.

How to encourage Your Child’s School To Have a Security Plan
The first step is to be involved in the school. Go to school board meetings. Vote for who you feel will make childrens safety a priority. Attend PTO meetings and have a voice in what the school invests in.
Find out what safety measures the school is taking. Do they have a functioning reporting system when someone becomes aware of a threat? Do they train students and staff to be prepared for any possible emergency situation? Be informed and be available to help create new initiatives toward a safer school.
Put the administrators on to threat assessment companies such as Alert Protection Services. Bringing in Alert Protection Services will put the tools in the hands of educators to keep your children safe and secure.
